Powerhouse Studio offers 2 separate studios providing both yoga and Pilates classes.

Pilates instruction is offered in both private, one-on-one sessions incorporating studio equipment and mat work, and also in small groups on the mat. After sufficient introduction via private sessions on studio equipment, students may move to duet or trio sessions with comparably trained students.

Yoga is presented primarily in group classes, but private instruction is also available. Students who have never attended a yoga class are encouraged to talk to an instructor about any injuries or limitations they may have.

ALL classes can be tailored to any level of practice. We maintain that our classes are appropriate for anyone.

What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates as a full body program that exercises the body and mind. It builds strength and flexibility, increases coordination and improves muscle control. It will improve your balance, posture and have you looking and feeling like a new person. It utilizes both mats and exercise equipment developed by Joseph Pilates.

The exercises in Pilates concentrate on the abdomen, lower back and buttocks – also known as the “powerhouse”, but also working your entire body throughout a session. You perform a few repetitions of each exercise, working fluidly from one to another and increasing in complexity with practice. Pilates is for everyone, including those with injuries or other ailments. Workouts are tailored to YOUR needs.

Pilates’ teachings are being preserved and passed on by his protégé, Romana Kryzanowaska. All of the Pilates instructors at Powerhouse Studio are certified under Romana’s Pilates, and attend Continuing Professional Education seminars on a regular basis to keep their training current.

In recent years, Pilates has seen a number of variations on the original method of Joseph Pilates. Many studios teach a watered-down version of Pilates and instructors do not necessarily have adequate training or a thorough understanding of the guiding principles. Please do your homework about any Pilates instruction you receive. Feel free to visit our studio anytime and ask us questions - we are here to guide and educate.

What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice of exercise bringing balance to the body and mind. This is accomplished by a variety of postures or “asanas”. The different asanas and how they are performed is what makes up the different varieties of yoga practice.

Yoga will improve your strength and flexibility, balance and breath. Yoga also works on your body internally: improving blood flow, rejuvenating your organs, flushing toxins from your body. Your mind and body will be refreshed, and you will gain mental clarity and an overall sense of well-being.

Unlike Pilates, which incorporates a variety of movements flowing from one to another, yoga can use poses which are held for an extended time, stretching the body and using the mind to overcome physical obstacles.

Yoga should be practiced with an instructor who can encourage and nurture your practice, but also help you with the proper alignment and breath in your poses. Most importantly however, you should feel comfortable with your instructor and their training. Again, we encourage you to visit our studio, meet our instructors and find for yourself the high-quality instruction we offer.
